G'day, today I'm going to talk about one of the Japanese business cultures called "Nominication". This word originally came from the combination of a Japanese word "Nomi (Drinking) with Communication. So, it means that you're communicating with your immediate boss and colleagues at Izakaya (a Japanese-style pub).

When you are working at a certain company, you'll mostly likely be forced to join such drinking society after finishing your daily task even if you don't want to. If you don't join this, then you are going to be isolated from other members, or not gonna get any promotion, or if you're super unlucky you're gonna be sucked.

This is such a terrible culture, but it's reality. In some cases, they enjoy or tend to enjoy in front of their boss. It seems to me that this is not a healthy culture at all. Because, they are prone to be really stressed out, so that they're likely to start smoko and go on the piss more often than they actually need.

So, in my honesty, this word "Nominication' tells me that "Nomination + Communication", which implies that employees are quasi-forcefully nominated by their immediate boss for drinking party. That's why I reckon they have no alternative but to accept their boss's invitation rather than willingly wanna join it. As far as I can tell, they seem not to enjoy drinking at all, or just try to pretend. If their boss doesn't satisfy, the employees are likely to be forced to stay over night, and have to go to work without having an enough sleep quite often. I can't do it anymore.

The word "Nominication" contains a couple of negative connotations, but of course a good thing as well. If you are in favour with your boss, then there is a high possibility of getting promotion.
