My input learning methods for boosting English skills

2020年4月18日

G'day mate. How are you? Today, I am going to talk about how I implement my daily input trainings to develop my English skills. There are a couple of ways you can do, depending on your preferences. So, I am going to explain here is just my way, so it's not applicable to everyone. Let's dive into it!

1 Reading training

Reading a wide range of disciplines such as political science, literature, current affairs, medical science, psychology, philosophy, IT, etc. The best reading method I can recommend is to pick up a piece of interesting articles that you think it's somehow difficult to understand. Because this training is not intended to entertaining yourself, but immersing yourself in comprehending the complexity of English structure, expressions and vocabularies.

Reading easy one doesn't necessarily help improve your English skills. My recommended websites are:

They are all free of charge, so very useful for English learners. But, of course, the level of English varies, depending on articles.

Reading here is not to do "rapid reading" but "intensive reading". So make sure you read an article thoroughly to understand what the article is about. "Rapid reading" isn't helpful for developing your basic reading skills. This method is just good for garnering tonnes of information in a timely manner when it's necessary.

For comprehension check, you try to write down your memos on you note. And then, you might want to write a piece of summary. The length should be 50 to 75 words.

2 Listening training

For listening practice, one of the best ways is to take advantage of TEDtalk, which is also free of charge, so that you can view as much as you want to. https://www.ted.com/talks

There are many excellent functions, one of which is "Transcript". You can listen to and read it at the same time to get a better understanding of what a speaker is talking about. You can also use this function for "read aloud" and "repeat sentence" to refine your pronunciation and oral fluency.

You will be surprised how fast you could boost your confidence in Listening and Reading as well. Please make sure you try to pick up different English accents at random, which really helps acclimatise yourself to some strong accents. Different people have different accents, so it's good to get used to them.

For comprehension check, you try to jot down some memos on your note, and then once the speaker's audio has finished, you are going to present the synopsis of what the speaker was talking about. Maybe approximately 2 - 3 mins to talk. Of course, this is not intended to any audience, but you do internal monologue, or "soliloquy."

If you are not sure how to do these trainings, please don't hesitate to contact me, so that I can tell you the ways in which I practise as my routine. And, I have some English programs for those struggling to pass the PTE exam as well as general English skills.

Thanks for reading today!

Have a lovely day.
