G'day mate. How are you going? Today, I am going to discuss why I'm still studying English. Today marks 1 year anniversary of the foundation of my English business. And it also marks a turning point in my English study. So it's good to have a discussion about this topic. Let's begin!
I always feel I need to continue to study when I bump into unknown or new English words or expressions, in which case I sometimes venture into a novel approach
I've been studying English for nearly two decades albeit having had intermittent periods such as three Master's degrees in Australia. But nevertheless I have never ceased reading, listening, writing and speaking English amidst some of my hardest times in the past. The existence of unknown and new words and expressions always keeps me motivated. In fact, not everyone can be like me, I reckon. Because, I love vocabularies so much indeed! Had I not been a logophile, I wouldn't have continued to study as of today. It's not an over-exaggeration, but it's rather true, actually.
I always feel I need to continue to study when I'm not fluent in self-talk, which of course depends upon the situation and topic
I am not a perfect non-native English speaker, which means that I still sometimes make grammatical mistakes, collocation errors, have odd/inappropriate expressions. This is normal for non-native like me, right? Even native speakers make mistakes. So, I don't really care. But of course I always want to improve my speaking skills by which I minimise these sorts of errors when I do my internal monologue. You can always make lots of mistakes in internal monologues. When I feel I'm stuck I always try to forcefully say SV and then just adding something, even if they are rubbish. That's fine. I always feel I need to continue to study when I discover something important during a face-to-face lesson with my students
No only do I need to solve my students' problems, I also need to study English with regard to the way in which I can teach in a more effective way. So, it's not quite English per se, but it's rather like a methodology, if you like. For instance, I need to find out the chief reason why she or he always makes this mistake and cannot rectify/refine/improve. I am really passionate about the process of investigating something relating to students' concerns and errors. It's great to use my brain, and scratch my head to solve the problems.
Last but not least, I always feel I need to continue to study English because I purely love it and studying English is one of the things worth devoting my whole life to
Studying new vocabulary is never ending, getting a native-like oral fluency is never coming into fruition rather sooner than expected. I am currently a 40 year old halfway non-native English speaker and I am not sure how many years I could stomach to study English seriously, but as long as my brain functions I will never stop learning new vocabularies, expressions and phrases, and also will never stop boosting my oral fluency. To be honest, there is still so much room for improvement when it comes to the performance and practicality of my English. What about you?
